What Are Metal Deburring Machines

There are different types of metal deburring machines.  Deburring can be defined as a finishing method typically used in manufacturing and industrial units. Metals are made into parts of different shapes and sizes by welding, molding or casting. The resulting pieces have jagged edges called burrs. The process of removing the burrs is called deburring. It is essential to make high quality parts that are smooth and functional while being aesthetically appealing too. There are many deburring processes, but the most common are mass-finishing, media blasting, spindle finishing, sanding, grinding, wire brushing, abrasive flow machining, electrochemical deburring, electropolishing, thermal energy method, machining, and manual deburring.

A bench grinder can be used to deburr metal parts if you use wheels specifically designed for this task. The advantage of using a bench grinder is that it works quickly. Unfortunately heat that is created can be a problem, so a cup of water in close proximity is often needed to dip the part in for cooling. The wheel’s shape also makes certain curves easier to deburr.

There are about 117 deburring methods for high-volume operations. These range from burning off burrs in a sealed chamber to the use of rotary tools. The use of wet or dry machining process used will be instrumental in determining the deburring method. In some cases, the deburring can be part of the machining process through the use of rotary tools. In other cases, the geometry prevents this approach and the deburring must be done in several steps using a chisel-shaped tool, end mill or fly cutter. Some parts will be created by multiple machining methods that result in different sized burrs. Multiple deburring processes may be necessary on a single part to maintain correct the dimensions.

There are more than 2,700 types of chamfering tools and countersinks. The designs are based upon the number of flutes for carrying away chips, coatings, material from which the tool is made and the size of burrs that can be removed. Countersinks are tools that feed into the entrance of hole like a drill. A single cutting surface or multiple cutting surfaces may be employed to remove a burr.  A holder keeps the blade from detaching while working. Holders are typically made of plastic and have locking mechanisms to ensure that the blade is properly attached.   You can fit any type of blade to any holder since they are made with the same dimensions.  Some holders are made with release buttons to automatically release the blade attachments. When you’re done attaching the blade to the holder, attach the holder to the handle before you can use your deburring tool. The handle’s main purpose is to secure the holder, and to allow you to rotate the holder and the blade for better maneuverability.

The type of metal deburring machines operation, size of the burr, hardness of the material and location of the burr will help to determine the method of deburring by hand. Countersinks, oversized drills, or oversized reamers may be used to deburr holes. Rotary tools, files, and abrasive stones can be used for edges of parts.
